As International Women’s Day approaches, I, as a Muslim woman, reflect on the empowerment that Islam has brought into my life. Islam has been not only a spiritual anchor but also a source of strength and liberation.

My religion provides a framework that honors and protects women's modesty. It acts as a shield against objectification and exploitation. Modesty in Islam is a symbol of dignity and self-respect. It allows women to navigate the world with confidence and grace.

Contrary to societal standards that teach women that freedom comes from exposing ourselves, Islam presents a different perspective.

True freedom lies in modesty and self-respect.

Islam encourages both men and women to dress modestly, covering themselves in a manner that preserves their dignity and wards off objectification.

By covering up I reclaim my autonomy asserting my values beyond physical appearance. Modesty becomes a form of empowerment. It allows women to be seen and appreciated for their intellect and character.

In essence, Islam challenges societal norms by redefining freedom. It lays not in the absence of clothing, rather it lies in modesty.

By covering up I break through from societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards. True freedom lies in the ability to have control over my body and life. It doesn’t lie in succumbing to objectification or exploitation.

In a world often misguided about Islam and the role of women within it, I find peace in the teachings of Islam, a religion that advocates for the rights and dignity of women.

As a Muslim woman in Jamaica, I find empowerment in practicing my faith.

Wearing my Hijab as a crown, holding my head high and showing the world that I don’t fall into this societal trap. My worth is in more than my looks.

On this International Women’s Day, I hope I can translate my sentiments into words, showcasing a different kind of empowerment and freedom.
