In an incident that occurred just before daybreak Tuesday morning, the unemployed man identified as Rodolph Denham of Burke Road, Old Harbour was shot in the leg after a brief chase with the police.

According to preliminary investigations, Denham was riding a bicycle along lower South Street when police on patrol signaled him to stop.

Denham, it is reported, disobeyed the police’s order, resulting in a chase onto the toll highway.

During the chase Denham, it is alleged, dismounted from the bicycle before pulling what appeared to be a gun from his waist.

At this point the cops fired two shots at Denham, who managed to jump a nearby wall before he was accosted by the officers.

A black Glock pistol was retrieved in the process but after closer examination the weapon was deemed to be fake.

Denham was transported to the hospital where he’s being treated under police guard.

Once released from hospital Denham will be charged and placed before a magistrate to determine his fate.

Under the new Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act, 2022, a person who is found guilty in the court of law for illegal possession of an imitation gun could face a minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment.

The Independent Commission (INDECOM) of Investigation is also probing the incident.
