Police impose revised curfew for Old Harbour region

Effective immediately, the rolling 48-hour curfew for Old Harbour will now begin at 2:00 am, while restrictions in Old Harbour Bay remain unchanged, starting at 6:00 pm, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Romario Rankin.
Rankin, the commanding officer for the Old Harbour police subdivision, warned that any surge in major crimes could lead to stricter measures. The order will remain in place until further advised, he added.
Since the start of the year, curfews have been a key strategy in curbing sudden spikes in crime and violence. While effective, the measure has drawn criticism for disrupting commerce in Old Harbour, a community known for its vibrant nightlife.
Old Harbour Bay is being strongly monitored by the security forces, moreso after the April 27 murder of 69-year-old Calvin Christie in the Terminal area. About 7:45 pm when the curfew was in full effect, Christie was shot and killed at his home by gunmen.
In response, police say they are engaging with business stakeholders to balance security concerns with economic activity.
