The Spanish Town Hospital (STH) marked a significant milestone on July 27, celebrating the fifth anniversary of its urology service. Since its inception in May 2021, the department has evolved into a centre of excellence, dramatically expanding access to specialized treatment for residents of St. Catherine and beyond.

Over the past five years, the department has performed nearly 1,500 surgical procedures and provided specialist outpatient care to thousands of patients, significantly reducing the need for locals to seek treatment outside the parish. The unit has introduced complex interventions previously unavailable at the institution, transforming the hospital into a leader in public healthcare.

Among its notable achievements are the successful completion of the hospital’s first radical cystectomy in January 2022, its first laparoscopic nephrectomy in September 2023, and over 60 radical prostatectomies for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. The department further enhanced its capabilities in July 2025 with the introduction of laser technology for minimally invasive kidney stone surgery, improving patient recovery times and clinical outcomes.

In celebration of the anniversary, the department received new prostate biopsy equipment, including an advanced ultrasound machine. This investment aims to boost early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, allowing patients to access timely treatment.

Senior Medical Officer of Spanish Town Hospital, Dr. Jacqueline Wright James, praised the dedication of the clinical team, stating, "Over the past five years, our Urology Department has demonstrated what is possible through vision, innovation, and teamwork under the leadership of Dr. Elon Thompson. The growth of this service has improved the lives of thousands of patients while expanding access to advanced urological care within the public health system."

Consultant Urologist Dr. Elon Thompson reflected on the department's journey, emphasizing the team’s commitment to the community. "We set out to build a service that would provide comprehensive, modern urological care closer to home for our patients,” he said. “Today, we celebrate the lives we have touched and remain committed to expanding our services, embracing new technologies, and delivering the highest standard of care."
