Role of physiotherapy in heart disease and stroke recovery

The Physiotherapy Department of the Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee Hospitals (KPH and VJH) will highlight this important aspect of patient care during Physiotherapy Week 2026, observed from September 6–12 under the theme “Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke.”

As part of the 250th anniversary commemorative events, a major highlight will be a Physiotherapy Expo on Wednesday, September 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the hospital compound. The event will provide members of the public with an opportunity to learn more about the vital role physiotherapy plays in preventing disability, improving mobility, and supporting recovery.

Ms. Shamel Powell-Grant, Acting Manager of Physiotherapy Services, KPH/VJH, said the observance will help to broaden public understanding of physiotherapy and its contribution to patient recovery. “When a person experiences a stroke or is living with cardiovascular disease, the impact can extend far beyond the initial diagnosis. Physiotherapy helps patients work towards regaining mobility, strength, balance and functional independence. Our goal is to empower patients to achieve their maximum functional capacity.” Ms. Powell-Grant said.

At the Expo, physiotherapists will showcase the various specialties and services offered at KPH and VJH through practical demonstrations, fitness tests, health checks and educational sessions. 

Additionally, patients will be offered the opportunity to register with the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD) and for the Health Cards from the National Health Fund. 

The department is inviting patients, caregivers, healthcare workers and members of the public to attend the Expo and discover how physiotherapy can make a meaningful difference in their journey towards improved health and wellness.
