Powerful cold front set to grip Jamaica
Article By: Old Harbour News
The Meteorological Service has issued a broad advisory warning residents of a sharp drop in temperatures, strong winds, and periods of showers.
According to the latest forecast, the strong frontal system will usher in "significantly cooler temperatures”, marking a stark departure from recent weather. A notable feature of this system will be strong and gusty winds, expected to be particularly intense across northern parishes and elevated terrain.
In addition to the wind chill, the public can expect generally cloudy conditions with "increased periods of showers affecting most parishes," suggesting a wet and dreary start to the week.
The advisory carries a stern warning for marine operators. The Met Service cautions that sea conditions will deteriorate rapidly from Saturday night, with very strong winds approaching gale force. "Fishers and other marine interests are advised to exercise extreme caution," the release stated, urging small craft operators to remain in port and larger vessels to prepare for hazardous conditions.
This cold front represents the most substantial intrusion of cool air this season. Authorities are reminding the public, especially the vulnerable, to have warm clothing accessible and to secure loose outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds.
The Meteorological Service has pledged to continue monitoring the system closely and will provide updates as necessary. For the latest official information, the public is encouraged to call the Met Service hotline at 116.
As Jamaicans prepare for the unusual bite of winter, the coming days will see a dramatic shift from typical tropical warmth to a blustery, rain-swept chill.
