A recent report from the Portmore City Municipality’s physical planning, environment, development, and climate change meeting has revealed a sharp rise in building violations within gated communities, with over 60 breaches identified in the Phoenix Park community alone.

In response, the Portmore City Municipality has announced a zero-tolerance approach to non-compliance. Property owners who fail to adhere to regulations will face legal action, and demolitions may be enforced based on court rulings.

To date, the municipality has issued over 30 violation notices. Failure to comply may result in fines of up to $1.5 million under Section 44(7) or $2.5 million under Section 46(5) of the relevant legislation.

Additionally, the Building Act 2018 (Section 17(1)) mandates that no construction work may proceed without a valid building permit. Violators risk prosecution and penalties upon conviction.

The city council is urging property owners to regularize their structures immediately to avoid legal consequences.
