Oshane 'Chip Chap' Wheatley

Police have identified the man fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with law enforcement early this morning.

The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. in Spring Hill, Red Ground, northern Old Harbour. The deceased has been named as Oshane Wheatley, also known as ‘Chip Chap.’ Investigators reported that the shooting followed an exchange of gunfire during a police operation.

According to preliminary reports, officers carried out a pre-dawn raid on a premises in the Five Mile area when Wheatley allegedly pointed a firearm at them. The police say they responded in self-defence, resulting in his death.

Wheatley, originally from Manchester, had reportedly been residing in the community for just over two years.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which probes shootings involving security forces, has launched an inquiry into the incident.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
