Councillor Steve Graham (JLP - Old Harbour Central Division) informed Old Harbour News after enquiries were made with the elected representative.

The proceeding is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 pm.

Christmas tree lighting ceremonies are historic tradition throughout towns and cities on the island, as it signals the start of the yuletide season.

While the celebration of Christmas dates back to the 17th Century it is unclear when the lighting of the Christmas tree in our towns was adopted to form part of the annual festivities.

But it has certainly become one of the many traditional events that citizens from all walks of life anticipate each year.

Aside from lighting up the tree the event is punctuated with multiple renditions of Christmas songs by individuals or groups, special greetings from elected officials, while children are treated with free rides and gifts.

This year’s event in the town square of Old Harbour could be one of the most exciting with the Old Harbour High School choir competing in the grand finale of the TVJ All Together Sing competition.

Old Harbour High, champions of the competition in 2016, enters the final stage as the favourite to lift the coveted crown once more.

Should they deliver on such expectations it will likely spark pandemonium in the town square, a moment that will ignite an ecstatic vibration within the hearts of those present.
